Learning Management System (LMS)
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software platform that enables organisations to create, deliver, manage, and track learning and training programmes. An LMS serves as the central hub for all training activity — hosting courses, enrolling learners, administering assessments, tracking completion, and generating compliance reports. Modern LMS platforms have evolved significantly beyond simple content repositories. AI-powered LMS platforms now automate course creation from raw documents, personalise learning paths for individual learners based on performance data, provide 24/7 AI tutoring, enable AI-driven practice simulations, and deliver analytics that measure actual skill development rather than completion rates. Key capabilities of an enterprise LMS include: SCORM and xAPI content compatibility, role-based content assignment, HRIS integration for automated onboarding, multilingual content delivery, mobile learning support, certification management with expiry tracking, and reporting dashboards for L&D leaders. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with Learning Experience Platform (LXP), though an LXP typically emphasises learner-driven content discovery while an LMS emphasises organisational administration and compliance tracking.
